The Ring of Oath is an essential key item in Elden Ring required to unlock the seal blocking access to the Moonlight Altar and complete Ranni the Witch's questline. Finding this legendary ring involves progressing through a lengthy series of tasks and locating a specific chest deep within Raya Lucaria Academy. Obtaining it unlocks one of the most memorable character storylines and endings in the game.
Prerequisites and Questline Steps
Before you can acquire the Ring of Oath, you must pledge your service to Ranni at Ranni's Rise in Three Sisters. You will need to defeat Starscourge Radahn to open the crater leading into Nokron, Eternal City, where you retrieve the Fingerslayer Blade for her.
After delivering the blade, Ranni grants you the Carian Inverted Statue and departs. You must then travel to Ainsel River Main via Renna's Rise and pick up the Miniature Ranni doll, speaking to it three times at a site of grace until it responds.
Defeating the Baleful Shadow for the Key
Once the Miniature Ranni doll speaks, it asks you to eliminate the Baleful Shadow invading NPC. Navigate through Nokstella, Eternal City until you reach the Lake of Rot entrance where the shadow spawns.
Defeating this red phantom rewards you with the Discarded Palace Key. This key is the specific item needed to open the locked treasure chest containing the Ring of Oath.
Chest Location in Raya Lucaria Academy
With the Discarded Palace Key in your inventory, fast travel to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library where Rennala resides. Walk past the central academy area toward the back of the library room.
Near Rennala, you will find a locked chest resting against the bookcase. Use the key to unlock the chest and obtain the Dark Moon Ring, which serves as the Ring of Oath in the story.
Using the Ring at Moonlight Altar
Take the ring back to the Lake of Rot and proceed through the Grand Cloister down into the Astel, Naturalborn of the Void boss arena. After defeating Astel, walk past the arena exit into the cavern.
The barrier that previously blocked your passage will disappear now that you hold the ring. Ascend the lift to the Moonlight Altar, enter the Cathedral of Manus Celes, and present the ring to Ranni to finish her quest.
