Unlocking secret allies adds a tremendous layer of depth and lore to classic role-playing adventures. In the original Final Fantasy VII, Vincent Valentine stands out as one of the most intriguing optional figures you can recruit. Finding him requires exploring a spooky estate and solving a specific puzzle before he agrees to accompany your party.

Locating the Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim

Your journey to recruit this mysterious gunslinger begins during your first visit to Nibelheim on Disc 1. Once you arrive in town, head directly to the northernmost edge to find the imposing Shinra Mansion. This dark, abandoned estate holds numerous secrets and tough enemies, so ensure your party is well-prepared for combat before stepping inside.

To progress your search, walk through the main entrance hall and navigate up the grand central staircase. Hang a left down the upper corridor to find an office room containing an old metal safe. This security container holds the vital key required to open the deeper chambers hidden far beneath the building.

Cracking the Safe Combination Puzzle

Opening the mansion safe requires inputting a highly specific sequence of directional turns under a strict time limit. You must accurately input the combination: Right to 36, Left to 10, Right to 59, and Right to 97 within twenty seconds. Be exceptionally careful not to overshoot any of the target numbers, as a single mistake forces you to restart the process completely.

Successfully entering the correct sequence triggers an immediate boss battle against a bizarre creature known as Lost Number. This powerful opponent shifts its physical and magical resistances depending on the types of attacks you use to deplete its initial health pool. Utilizing status effects like Paralysis or Stop can help neutralize its devastating offensive abilities during the multi-stage fight.

Exploring the Manor Basement Vaults

Defeating Lost Number rewards your party with the useful Odin Summon Materia and the essential Basement Key. Take this key and navigate toward the secret passage located on the right side of the upper floor. Follow the winding steps deep into the subterranean caverns beneath the mansion until you reach a long brick corridor.

Use your newly acquired key to unlock the heavy wooden door situated along the western wall of the basement corridor. Inside this gloomy chamber, you will find a solitary wooden coffin resting peacefully in the center of the floor. Interacting directly with this object will cause Vincent Valentine to emerge and initiate a long conversation regarding his dark history.

Convincing the Former Turk to Join

During your initial conversation with the brooding man, make sure to select options that ask him about Sephiroth and his own identity. He will eventually tire of speaking and retreat back into his coffin to sleep. Do not lose hope at this point, as you simply need to interact with the box a second time to continue exhausting his dialogue lines.

Once he finishes speaking, turn around and begin walking out of the crypt back toward the basement stairs. As you reach the exit door, a brief cutscene will trigger where he runs up to stop your party. Fascinated by your quest and eager to confront his past, Vincent will officially join your active roster as a permanent companion.
